"Cocuswood" Tabletop Sculpture Single Edition
Abstract modern sculpture made of Jamaican Cocuswood and Stainless Steel.
Dimensions are 18" x 8" x 3".
Cocuswood, also known as the Jamaican Rain Tree, is a very dense tropical hardwood with excellent musical tone quality, and was used for making flutes in England and France especially during the 19th century. It is still occasionally used for wooden musical instruments such as bagpipes, clarinets, oboes, and piccolos.
As the name suggests, the Jamaican rain tree is well known to explode into bloom almost immediately after a rain event.
This modernist piece of art will proudly enhance any home.
(NOTE: Due to the scarcity of the wood this is a one-of-a-kind piece... no more will be made of this design)
Master Craftsman Intent: "Cocuswood" is a definitive study in organic-industrial contrast within the Modernist Alchemy movement. Designed by Marc Staples, this 1-of-1 tabletop sculpture pairs the precision of stainless steel with the legendary density of Jamaican Cocuswood (the Jamaican Rain Tree). It is a meditative architectural anchor designed for high-end residential galleries or executive suites.
Technical Engineering & Materiality: Standing at a commanding 18 inches, the piece features the rare Brya ebenus (Cocuswood), a tropical hardwood prized for its extreme density and world-class musical tone quality. Historically used for 19th-century orchestral flutes and oboes, the wood's dark, lustrous grain provides a powerful organic counterpoint to the cool, reflective verticality of the stainless steel.
Biological Narrative: The wood is sourced from the "Jamaican Rain Tree," famous for exploding into bloom immediately following a rain event. This sculpture captures that "latent energy," bridging the gap between botanical phenomena and modern sculptural form.
Absolute Exclusivity: Due to the extreme global scarcity of authentic Cocuswood, this is a unique, single-edition original. No further iterations of this design will be produced. As a signed Marc Staples work, it represents a "Once-in-a-Lifetime" acquisition of both a masterwork and a vanishing natural resource.
