DaVinci’s Crew: Reviving Purpose, Craft, and Camaraderie in the Shop

Retirement often brings plenty of open calendar space, but it rarely replaces the satisfaction of solving a tough mechanical problem or working with your hands. Across south-central Virginia, our communities are home to a remarkable wealth of retired talent—machinists, electrical and mechanical engineers, career tradesmen, and industrial designers. Men who spent decades designing systems, reading prints, and building things from the ground up, now finding themselves with idle time and fewer opportunities to put those sharp skills to work.

• Lending a Hand on Studio Builds: Studio work often involves complex, heavy-duty challenges—rigging large-scale architectural light fixtures, calibrating kinetic biophilic mobiles, or troubleshooting mechanical linkages for acoustic and sculptural art. Members bring their technical perspective and extra set of hands to these creative builds when their time allows.
  
  
• Access for Personal Projects: In return, members gain access to the studio's professional-grade tools, heavy fabrication space, and metal-shaping equipment. Whether you have a piece of shop machinery you want to restore, a custom bracket you need cut, or a personal sculpture you've sketched on graph paper for years, the shop floor and guidance are open to you.
  
  
• Zero Rigid Commitments: Life, travel, and family obligations always come first. Members drop in for an afternoon, a couple of mornings a week, or whenever a specific build captures their interest.
