What a journey it's been! I'm incredibly excited to announce a big milestone in my art—I’ve just completed the 2,000th wind bell in my Mission Wind Bell series.
Reaching a goal this significant calls for an equally grand celebration. For this special occasion, I decided to make the 2,000th bell a true statement piece. At 6 inches in diameter and a total of 28 inches long, it’s a bell that can’t be ignored. Crafted from bronze and steel with a dark bronze patina, it has a truly powerful, "honkin' big" sound that fills the air.
This series, and the unique movement it represents for art in metal mediums, all started with a simple piece of inspiration back in 1980. I was on a trip to New Mexico and found myself in the town of Hatch. While browsing a craft shop, I discovered a rustic ceramic wind bell that I instantly connected with. I bought it on the spot, and it’s been a cherished part of my art collection ever since.
About five years ago, the idea came to me to create a metal version of that bell. The first one was a bit rough around the edges, but it successfully captured the rustic charm and unique sound of the original ceramic piece. I named that first bell San Estevan as a tribute to the beautiful San Estévan del Rey Mission Church in New Mexico. This historic church, a National Historic Landmark, remains a mission church to this day.
From that single bell named for a historic church, a whole series was born. The journey from one bell to 2,000 has been one of exploration, refinement, and a deep appreciation for the art of metalwork. Each bell is a reflection of that original inspiration, carrying a piece of history and a powerful voice.
